what is gates and how to create them and use them

Gates are like callbacks, but they return boolean values. They have been very useful to me in checking the success of callback functions. I'm not sure what other people's use cases have been for it. I am sure the check-success model is a rudimentary use of such functionality, but very useful nonetheless.
