Forks U++ into a new project, using the license that you want and all other things that will make you happy.
You will find a lot of people which shares your ideas and which will want to contribute.

Try http://projecteuler.net/ with "powaah" of U++ console Core (to better understand it). So you can help other newbies later in forum . Also that page *is lot of fun*, if you are really into coding.

Don't blame MS, they do their work honestly... Buying windows is cheaper than hiring YOU to write windows from scratch. Sad thing about GNU:
1.It is selfish
2.It use GPL and LGPL
3.It blames others for its own fault.
So I try to stick on MS, and BSD, Apache, Xiph, etc...

How about all the lawsuits M$ has lost, settled or still pending.
XP is OK but Vista was/is a joke with all the cute stuff added and the problems involved. The M$ port of C++ to C# is something many programmers try to avoid.
Ubuntu with Wine = $0.00
Faster, safer and less errors.
If you have a need to change some of the core OS code you can.
Try that in M$.
Sad thing about GNU:
1.It is selfish - - And M$ is not?
2.It use GPL and LGPL - - No open license, just $$$ and more $.
3.It blames others for its own fault. - - How is this different for M$?
M$ good for casual users
Apple good for selling gizmos($$$) but way behind the curve in software.
Linux/Unix hard for new users.
It depends on a persons need. You don't use a screwdriver when a hammer is necessary.
