It seems that MacOS X is a slightly different
flavor of UNIX (BSD I think, instead of the other
major branch).

Yes, while X11 appears to be somewhat compliant,
the compiler and linker flags are different.
U++ does handle this difference in Linux
with the OS flags (OSX11, SOLARIS, etc).
