Compiler: MSVC8
32-bit TheIDE.
No problems with 32-bit applications.
Can compile and launch x64 application in debugging mode. TheIDE crashes on exit of a debugging application.
64-bit TheIDE.
No problems with 64-bit applications.
Can compile but not launch 32-bit application in debugging mode. Error message: “The application failed to initialize properly (0x80000003)”.
All applications build with different versions of TheIDE run fine without TheIDE.

Hm, now this is interesting. IMO, it should be possible to debug 64-bit apps in 32-bit ide, but it never worked.
If it is possible to get it working, then the most obvious idea is to stay 32-bit with windows ide, right?

That's right. I've even spent 15 minutes trying to debug TheIDE in TheIDE. No luck yet, but the idea seems to be interesting.
