I have a status bar in my main window and am trying to update it before attempting to connect to a SQL database. There's no repaint/refresh until after all the network code has completed so the message is never displayed. The only thing I can think to do is change the status bar, set a timer, then do the SQL work after the timer expires.

Is there an easier way?
