I think this is definitely a bug. I'm not sure when did the functionality disappear, but I'm pretty sure it did work when I was developing the bazaar/plugin/portaudio stuf - which is the only package that depends on it, but I would like to use this feature soon in issue #247 as well.

Mirek, could you please review the attached patch? It restores the behavior, I'm just not sure if the placement is correct.
