Well, we can start moderating new accounts. I also suggest you to investigate admin setup of forum, perhaps you will find some solution.

Alternatively, I can also imagine adding some tool that automatically deletes new users that have not posted for some days or something like that. I would not really like to change to code of forum, but this could be done by some periodic cron job doing some (my)SQL.

Or... the reason why they are registering new accounts is that they can put a link to homepage there, which is then found by (google) bots and increases the pagerank of target page. Perhaps removing homepage link completely would fix the problem too.

OK, I have deleted users with zero posts, non-empty 'home_page' that joined more than 2 hours ago. This was one time only, but we could have a cron to do so.

I think we could define some rules here.

Like zero posts after 14 days user gets deleted even if he is confirmed.

2 hours after user with home_page is not confirmed, has home_page defined, he gets deleted...

I do not like it. Many users never posts.

There are some ideas that could be interesting (from FUD here):
- Activating the Botscout.plugin (an open boot database)
- To try other captchas: Recaptcha.plugin, Riddlecaptcha.plugin, Mathcaptcha.plugin.
- Moderate user's first 5 messages
- N messages before allowing users to post links (Users are required to post more than N messages before they can embed links into their posts)

1 message was already activated. For now I would say single post to check is enough, no need to waste time with 5.

Now there is one thing I have missed before: this option is about links in signature too. I would say it could fix the problem considerably. I have activated 1 message too here, we will see how it is going...

Well, at least we do not have any spam in the actual forum yet, just in Members...

This could stop ~95% of the spam.
They post the spam with a link to what they are trying to sell: Ugg boots, designer clothes and bags, football T-shirts, porn, prescribed drugs, travel agency, etc..

That has been my experience of what the spam includes as a moderator on another forum.

edit: The U.S. has been trying to get China to crack down on spammers.

Now new Forum members joined from 19 June 2012 on without messages seem to be deleted. IMHO many members that do not post are real and should remain.

Please excuse my post. I used to have a live-bookmark to the old forum in Firefox that has stopped working now. Is there a way I can mark a live-bookmark to the new forums? I tried subscribing to the index page of the forums, but it doesn't seem to work. Perhaps I am doing something wrong.

I'm not familiar with firefox live-bookmarks, but I assume they are based on RSS or RDF feeds. The new feed address is http://www.ultimatepp.org/forums/feed.php?mode=m&l=1& ;basic=1

Also note that the options can be customized, as described in the help here.

The live bookmark is nothing more than RSS feed. Still the new feed URL does not load. I have loaded this as the feed location http://www.ultimatepp.org/forums/feed.php?mode=m&l=1& ;basic=1 Unfortunately for me, it still fails to load.

The direct URL to the forums works. I use that for now.

I normally use the RSS feed as it gives me a snapshot of the new messages in a click-able link format. That is the part that does not work.

Well, there is single new user registered since yesterday and he might be genuine. So the only remaining problem with bots and spammers now is here

- I mean, you can see there they are still trying, but are now refused. Them still trying has some small negative impact on traffic bandwidth being wasted and some CPU resources dedicated, but nothing I would loose sleep about. IMO we can consider the "spam issue" resolved for now.

Especially, I am no big fan of elaborated captchas - too often I am unable to decode them myself Smile

This is the members list from just one year on. Everybody have sent a post. All members that have not sent any post do not appear.

It really does not need to be done by U++, any editor able to edit .png with alpha would do.

Just download current gray icon from the web, edit and PM to me...

I spent some time with M$ Paint.

As far as discernible difference between new posts and old your bumpy circle and no icon is the most difference.

After tinkering a bit with the current no new posts icon changing even the shape helps.

Here is an icon that is just like a minus sign.
