How about putting it readily in constructor:
ImageBuffer(Size sz, int kind=IMAGE_UNKNOWN)

and default to something that always works, while not optimal for all uses.

And also in:
ImageBuffer::Create(Size sz, int kind=IMAGE_UNKNOWN)...

Mostly I know exactly what is going to be found in the buffer anyway...
