If you want to test something "modern", there is mercurial.... same principle as bazaar, I guess, so local repositories. And is quite well ported on linux + windows too, as opposite to GIT.
It has not the automatic version merging... you must solve code merges manually, with some merge program. I think that was a coder's choice; the rest seems quite good.
