Isn't it possible, to write a general "version control plugin system"?
Something like in eclipse?

A method to get an icon for a particular file in browser, a hook to add extra items to popup-menu of an item in browser, and some hooks on file addition, renaming and deletion.
Of course my list may be incomplete.

With a plugin system, it would be possible to create VCS plugins for simple daily use. For advanced tasks, the VCS's native tools could be used.
