Well, the appearance is normal with NOGTK flag since you need GTK for detecting host theme. And it is very difficult to statically link with GTK+, so IMO it is best just to do full dynamic links.

As to the heap leaks, that is not normal. Chances are that it's your code but the problem can be hard to track down if it's to do with global/static variables.
