I've got gcc-4.2.3 on this computer. The deb package wants
gcc-4.1
libstdc++6.4.1.dev
gcc-3.4-base
gcc-4.1-base
g++4.1
libstdc++6-dev
gcc-3.4

Maybe I'm just not understanding it, but why does it have these version specific compilers? and why two very different versions?

Because 4.2.3 is buggy to the extend that U++ apps do not work in it.
